How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail in CapCut

The cleanest way to make a YouTube thumbnail in CapCut is to create a separate still image in CapCut Web, export it as JPG or PNG, open the saved file, then upload it in YouTube Studio. If the video is already open in CapCut Desktop, the Cover control can help you choose and style a frame. Do not assume exporting the video also sends a custom thumbnail to YouTube; the thumbnail is its own file and its own upload.

Use YouTube's Current Thumbnail Requirements

YouTube's current custom-thumbnail help is the authority for the file that will be uploaded. It recommends 3840 × 2160 for regular videos and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts. The normal-video ratio is 16:9; the Shorts ratio is 9:16. JPG and PNG are accepted.

If CapCut offers a 1280 × 720 YouTube preset, it still has the correct 16:9 shape and clears YouTube's minimum width. It is not the current maximum-quality recommendation. Start with YouTube's larger target when the editor and source image support it; do not stretch a small, soft screenshot just to create more pixels.

A vertical video has another display wrinkle. YouTube warns that a 16:9 custom thumbnail on a vertical video may be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions, even though the custom image can still appear elsewhere. This is why the video type must be decided before the CapCut canvas is built.

Choose the Source Before You Open a Template

The source frame carries more weight than the arrows, glow or type added later. Pick one moment that proves the video's subject: the finished result for a tutorial, the product for a review, the place for a travel video or the expression that actually occurs in the scene. A dramatic frame that never appears in the video may win curiosity once and lose trust immediately.

• Start from the original frame. Avoid a screenshot downloaded from a social feed when the video file can provide a sharper source.
• Choose one subject. Three competing faces, products or screenshots force the viewer to decode the design before understanding the topic.
• Write one promise. The thumbnail can show the result, conflict or question; it does not need to repeat the full video title.
• Keep an untouched copy. Background removal, sharpening and generative changes should not replace the only source frame.

Make the Thumbnail in CapCut Web

CapCut's newer thumbnail tutorial recommends a design project, a blank canvas or template, a source image, a short title and a small-size check. Its dedicated thumbnail maker page documents a Web workspace and image download. Labels can change, so follow the job rather than memorizing an old menu recording.

1. Open a still-image design route. Use CapCut Web's photo/AI Design workspace or its live YouTube thumbnail entry. Do not start a normal video project for a file that should end as JPG or PNG.
2. Set the ratio before arranging anything. Use 16:9 for a regular video or 9:16 for a Short. If a custom-size control is available, enter YouTube's current target dimensions.
3. Upload the best source frame. Confirm that you have the right to use every photo, logo and font that enters the design.
4. Crop around the subject. Leave room for text without pushing the face, product or key result against an edge.

The boundary matters. CapCut's older Desktop article mixes Cover editing with video export settings such as frame rate and codec. Those settings belong to the video file, not the custom thumbnail. If your current Cover panel offers a separate image save, verify that output. If it does not, export or capture the chosen source frame through a documented still-image route and rebuild the final layout in Web. Do not take a soft screenshot of the editor canvas, and do not add a “thumbnail frame” to the beginning or end of the video as a workaround.

Text should add information the image cannot carry. “Before / After,” “3 Fixes” or one concrete result can work; the exact wording depends on the video. JPG is usually the practical choice for a photographic thumbnail because it compresses well. PNG suits hard-edged graphics, text and transparency, although YouTube displays a finished rectangular image rather than an editable transparent layer. The correct choice is the file that stays clear and fits the upload limit.

Open the downloaded file outside CapCut and inspect its pixel dimensions, ratio, crop, text and detail. On Mobile, YouTube currently limits a normal video thumbnail to 2 MB. On Desktop, the current limit for video and Shorts thumbnails is 50 MB. If a file is too large, export a JPG at slightly lower quality or reduce the dimensions while keeping the 16:9 or 9:16 ratio. 2. Open Content and select the video.

A Short needs a separate 9:16 design, not a stretched 16:9 thumbnail. YouTube's July 24, 2026 Shorts thumbnail rollout announcement says uploading began with YouTube Partner Program creators and would expand.
