A missing CapCut project is not always a deleted project. First check the exact account and login method, then Local Projects, Spaces and Trash. If the project folder still exists, copy it before you open, rename or edit anything. If CapCut opens the timeline but shows missing clips, the project may be intact and only needs its original media reconnected.
Stop before you try a “fix.” Do not uninstall CapCut, clear app storage, empty Trash, run a cleaner or edit project files yet. Recovery attempts should happen on a copy. Keep the original device, project folder and source media untouched until you know what failed.

We compared current CapCut Help guidance for Projects, Spaces, Trash, account login and imported exports with Apple and Android storage guidance. We also reviewed recent 2026 reports from editors whose drafts disappeared after a reinstall, disk cleanup or crash.
CapCut labels and recovery options vary by platform, version, account and region. This guide does not promise that a permanently deleted local draft can be restored. It gives you the safest order to find what still exists without damaging the best remaining copy.
Can you recover a deleted CapCut project?
Sometimes. Your best chance is when the project is still in CapCut Trash, stored in the correct Space, present under another login method or still sitting in its local project folder. If only the source clips moved, reconnecting those files can restore the timeline without rebuilding it.
If a local-only mobile project was permanently deleted, the app was removed with its data or Android Clear storage was used, CapCut may have no editable project left to restore. Google’s own Android storage guidance says Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Third-party recovery apps may find exported videos or loose media, but that is not the same as recovering the editable CapCut timeline.

Before recovery: preserve what is still there
- Stop writing to the same storage. Close CapCut normally if it responds. Avoid cleaner apps, bulk cache tools and large downloads.
- Take screenshots of the error and project card. Record the project name, duration, size, operating system and CapCut version.
- On Desktop, copy the complete project folder. Use the active Settings → Draft/Project → Save to location rather than a path from an old tutorial. Our guide to where CapCut saves projects explains how to identify the live folder.
- Copy the original media too. Keep videos, photos, voiceovers, music, fonts and graphics in their existing folder structure.
- Work only on the duplicate. Do not rename JSON or temporary files in the only copy, even if a forum recipe says the method is “guaranteed.”
Recent community threads show why this order matters. Some editors recovered a version from a temporary file; others found that the suggested replacement was empty, incompatible or made no difference. That is a warning signal, not a repeatable product feature.
If the project disappeared from the home screen
CapCut’s current project troubleshooting guidance tells users to check Trash, the correct account and Local versus Cloud views. Follow that order before touching files:
- Check the login route, not just the email. Google sign-in and email-and-password can create different CapCut accounts even when the displayed email is identical. CapCut confirms this in its guide to different accounts under the same email.
- Look in Local Projects. A desktop project created locally may not appear in Spaces and may never have been uploaded.
- Open every relevant Space. Personal and team Spaces can hold different projects. A thumbnail is encouraging, but the recovery is not verified until the editable timeline opens.
- Check Trash or Recycle Bin if your build shows it. Restore the project from there before creating a replacement with the same name.
- Check the original device. Do not assume a blank new installation proves the old copy is gone.
If Spaces will not load or the correct account appears empty, rule out a sign-in or network failure before treating the project as deleted. Use the CapCut connection checklist, then reopen the same Space.
Restore from CapCut Trash when it is available
CapCut’s help pages are not perfectly consistent about deletion. One current page says old projects can be restored from Trash; its deletion guide also warns that deleted projects may be unrecoverable and shows different behavior on Desktop and Web. The practical rule is simple: if your current interface offers Trash, inspect it immediately; if the item was permanently removed, do not assume CapCut keeps another hidden copy.
- Open the Projects or Recent Projects screen on the platform where the project was deleted.
- Open Trash, Recycle Bin or the Space’s deleted-items view if present.
- Confirm the project name and date. Restore it; do not duplicate or rename it first.
- Open the restored project and check the complete timeline.
- Create a separate verified backup before continuing work.
Be careful on CapCut Web: its current deletion instructions say a deleted web project syncs across devices linked to the same account. Switching devices is therefore not a dependable undo button.
If the project opens but clips are missing
This is usually a media-link problem, not a deleted timeline. The project can still remember cuts, timing, captions and effects while the video or audio files it references have moved.
- Do not delete the red, black or offline placeholder from the timeline.
- Locate the original file. Check external drives, camera folders, Photos libraries, Downloads and any folder that was recently renamed.
- Reconnect the missing file through CapCut’s locate, replace or relink prompt. Choose the exact original when possible.
- Repeat for audio, fonts and graphics. A video can appear fixed while a voiceover or font is still missing.
- Scrub the whole timeline and export a difficult section to confirm sync, captions and effects.
If an external drive changed letter on Windows or a folder moved on Mac, restore the old mount or folder relationship before reorganizing anything else. If the source file itself is damaged, recover or replace that media first; changing project metadata will not repair a corrupt video file.
If one CapCut project will not open
When other projects work but one draft crashes, freezes or reports an unusual path, protect the folder before experimenting. Then try the least destructive checks:
- Confirm CapCut can create and reopen a tiny new project. This separates an app-wide failure from a single damaged draft.
- Make sure the disk is connected, writable and has free space. Do not run cleanup while testing.
- Use a compatible CapCut version. If the draft was last opened in a newer build, an older build may refuse it.
- Duplicate the affected project through CapCut if the home screen still offers that command. Test the duplicate.
- If CapCut itself crashes across projects, follow our CapCut crash diagnosis without uninstalling or clearing storage until the draft is safe.
About draft_content.json fixes: these are advanced, version-dependent recovery attempts, not routine steps. Never delete or overwrite the original project folder. If you inspect backup or temporary metadata, do it only in a full duplicate and keep the original filenames, sizes and timestamps recorded.If the copied project still will not open, send CapCut Support the platform, app version, exact error, project name/size, last successful action and whether the folder and source files still exist. Do not send private footage or account credentials unless the official support channel explicitly requires a specific diagnostic file and you understand what it contains.
After uninstalling CapCut or clearing mobile data
On mobile, the recovery limit is harsher because local drafts normally live in app-managed storage.
iPhone and iPad
Apple distinguishes Offload App, which keeps documents and data, from removing an app. Apple’s iPhone storage guide confirms that offloading preserves data. That does not make deleting CapCut a safe recovery step. If the app was deleted, check the correct CapCut Space and any full-device backup made before deletion. Restoring an entire device backup has wider consequences, so compare the backup date and current phone data first.
Android
Clear cache and Clear storage/data are not the same command. Android says Clear cache removes temporary data, while Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. If storage/data was cleared and the project was never uploaded, there may be no editable local draft left for CapCut to reopen.
In both cases, check Spaces using the original sign-in method. Also look for a reference MP4 in Photos or Google Photos, but remember that finding the rendered video does not restore its layers.
What an exported video can and cannot save
If the final MP4 survived, keep it. It can preserve the finished picture and sound, and it is valuable when rebuilding. It cannot bring back editable captions, cuts, keyframes, masks, effects or separate audio tracks.
CapCut’s official guide to importing a previous project says the exported video returns as one flattened clip. Any page that calls an MP4 “full project recovery” is using the wrong definition.
Know when recovery is realistic
Do not pay for recovery software merely because it previews a video thumbnail. Ask what it can return: an exported video, loose source clips or the complete editable CapCut project with working metadata. Those are very different outcomes.
If the project is permanently gone, preserve the final export and remaining source media, then rebuild in a new draft. Afterward, use our CapCut backup and transfer workflow: editable project, source media and reference export, all verified before the original is removed.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Recently Deleted in CapCut?
Its location and availability vary by platform and build. Check Projects, Recent Projects, the relevant Space and any Trash or Recycle Bin entry shown in the current interface. If no Trash exists or it was emptied, CapCut may not offer another built-in restore route.
Can I recover a CapCut project after deleting the app?
Only if another recoverable copy exists, such as a verified project in CapCut Spaces or a suitable device backup from before deletion. A local-only mobile draft may be removed with the app data.
Why did my CapCut projects disappear after logging in?
You may be using a different sign-in method. Google, email, TikTok and Facebook routes can open separate CapCut accounts even when the email looks the same. Also check Local Projects and every Space.
Can draft_content.json restore a corrupted project?
Sometimes a compatible backup metadata file helps, but there is no universal recipe. Work only on a complete duplicate of the project folder, never overwrite the original and expect version differences or missing media to defeat the attempt.
Can I recover a CapCut project from an exported video?
No. You can import the MP4 and rebuild around it, but it returns as one flattened clip. The original tracks, text layers, effects and keyframes are not restored.
Does clearing CapCut cache delete projects?
Clearing temporary cache is different from clearing app storage or data. On Android, Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Back up and verify important projects before using either command or a third-party cleaner.
