CapCut can place the spoken language and one translated language on screen together. The clean workflow is not “translate and hope.” Generate the source captions first, correct every important word, add the target language, then review both lines as a pair. If the source transcript is wrong, the translation starts from the wrong sentence.

The current CapCut help page documents bilingual-subtitle routes for Web, Desktop and Mobile. The clearest current interface evidence is on Desktop: its screenshot shows Spoken language, Bilingual captions and Generate in the Auto Captions panel. Web and Mobile are less tidy because CapCut’s supporting screenshots do not visibly show every target-language control described in the instructions. Follow the live labels in your build rather than forcing an old tutorial to match.

Pick the output before you touch Auto Captions

Three jobs sound similar but produce different results:

  • Bilingual subtitles: the source text and its translation remain visible together. This is the workflow covered here.
  • Translated-only subtitles: the viewer sees the target language, but not the source line. Use the broader CapCut Video Translator guide when translated text or dubbed speech is the real goal.
  • AI dubbing: CapCut changes the spoken audio. Captions may still be useful, but they are not the translation method.

Changing CapCut’s menu language does none of those things. The official interface-language instructions only change the app language on that device. They do not translate speech or captions.

One more boundary matters: CapCut’s bilingual-caption workflow starts with one spoken/source language and translates it into one target language. It is not a promise that one pass will correctly identify two speakers who keep switching languages. Treat code-switching as a separate recognition problem and test a short representative clip before processing the full project.

Prepare the project so you do not repair the same mistake twice

Do this before generating anything:

  1. Finish the rough cut. Trimming after caption generation can leave pairs split or out of sync.
  2. Listen for names, product terms, numbers and abbreviations that speech recognition may miss.
  3. Write a tiny terminology note for the target language. A five-line list of preferred names and phrases is more useful than correcting the same term throughout the timeline.
  4. Check the audio mix. Music or noise that masks the speaker can damage the source transcript before translation even begins.
  5. Duplicate the project or keep a safe copy before a batch change.

For the normal source-caption workflow—speech source, language, timing and styling—start with the CapCut Auto Captions guide. If Auto Captions generates nothing or stalls, solve that first with the caption-generation troubleshooting guide. Translation cannot repair a missing source track.

Create bilingual subtitles on CapCut Desktop

The current official Desktop evidence gives the most concrete route:

  1. Open the finished edit and select Captions.
  2. Open Auto Captions.
  3. Choose the audio source you want CapCut to hear.
  4. Set Spoken language to the language actually spoken in the clip.
  5. Open Bilingual captions and choose one target language.
  6. Select Generate.
  7. Correct the source captions before approving the translated line.

The screenshot currently embedded in CapCut’s bilingual-subtitles help page shows Pro jewels beside the bilingual selector and Generate. That is evidence of the captured interface, not a permanent rule for every country, account or version. If your signed-in app displays a plan prompt, the live prompt is the current access gate.

Do not translate the entire project before checking a sample. Generate 20–30 seconds that includes a name, a number, a quick phrase and a quiet pause. If the source recognition or target-language choice is wrong, fixing the setup now is faster than repairing hundreds of paired blocks later.

Create bilingual subtitles on CapCut Web

CapCut’s current help prose documents a Web route, but the supporting image only proves that the Web editor has Captions and an Auto captions card. It does not visibly prove the target-language selector. Use this qualified route:

  1. Open the project in CapCut Web and choose Captions.
  2. Open Auto captions.
  3. Select the source audio and spoken language.
  4. Look in the live generation panel for a target-language, translate or bilingual option.
  5. Generate a short test and confirm that both language lines appear.

Create bilingual subtitles on CapCut Mobile

CapCut’s current help text gives this Mobile route: Captions → Auto Captions, choose the spoken language, then use Translate to for the target language. The supporting images show the Captions button and the Auto Captions sheet, but the target selector itself is not visible. That difference is worth stating because menus move and access can vary.

On a phone, use the same sample-first rule as Desktop. If Translate to is absent:

  • update from the official App Store or Google Play listing;
  • sign in to the account that owns the project and inspect the live plan prompt;
  • check whether the control moved under Advanced options in your build;
  • try Web or Desktop without deleting the working Mobile project;
  • use a reviewed import when automatic translation is not reliable enough.

Avoid old APKs, repacked installers and destructive reinstalls. A missing button does not prove the feature has disappeared worldwide, and a reinstall can put a working local project at risk.

Correct the source before judging the translation

CapCut’s own Video Translator workflow describes speech recognition before translation and tells the editor to review the transcript and translated result. That order matters.

Read the source track alone first. Correct:

  • people, brand and place names;
  • dates, prices, measurements and percentages;
  • negatives such as “not,” “never” and “without”;
  • industry terms and abbreviations;
  • punctuation that changes the sentence boundary;
  • captions that begin or end on the wrong word.

Only then judge the target line. Machine translation can produce fluent wording that changes the meaning. Compare each pair in this order:

  1. Meaning: does the target line make the same claim?
  2. Names and numbers: did every specific detail survive?
  3. Negation: did “not” disappear or move?
  4. Timing: does the pair arrive and leave with the same spoken thought?
  5. Line break: can the viewer understand the phrase without waiting for the next card?
  6. Hierarchy: can the two languages be distinguished without reading a legend every time?

For client, medical, legal, financial or public-safety material, a fluent speaker should approve the target language. A polished preview is not evidence that the translation is safe to publish.

Make two languages readable on a phone

The problem is rarely “Can I fit both lines?” It is “Can someone read both lines while still seeing the video?” Two short single-language captions can turn into a four-line wall after translation.

Use a simple hierarchy:

  • keep the source and translation in the same position throughout the video;
  • use one restrained difference—weight, colour or size—not a different animation for every line;
  • break lines at natural phrases rather than in the middle of a name or verb;
  • shorten repeated filler when the meaning is unchanged and editorial policy allows it;
  • keep captions clear of platform buttons, usernames and lower-screen controls;
  • review the exported file at actual phone size, not only in the editor.

General accessibility guidance from the W3C media requirements warns against excessive subtitle rows and speed and notes that, realistically, no more than two languages should be shown at once. The Australian Government video guidance also recommends logical line breaks and full accuracy/timing review. Neither source gives a universal CapCut character limit, so do not force every language into an arbitrary count.

What to do when Bilingual captions is missing or fails

Work through the smallest reversible checks first:

  1. Confirm the job. You need two visible languages, not AI dubbing or an interface-language change.
  2. Confirm the source track. Generate and correct ordinary Auto Captions first.
  3. Check the live platform route. Desktop currently gives the clearest bilingual selector; Web and Mobile controls may differ.
  4. Read the badge or prompt. Do not infer access from an old screenshot or another user’s account.
  5. Test a new 20-second project. If the control works there, the original project may be the problem.
  6. Preserve the working edit. Duplicate before clearing caches, updating or trying another platform.
  7. Use a supported fallback. Import a reviewed timed subtitle file on Web/Desktop, or burn in one language if two selectable tracks are not required.

Recent community reports describe missing or moved translation controls in particular CapCut builds. They are useful warning signals, not proof that every user has the same problem. Current official help still documents the feature, so version, account, region, rollout and plan state all need checking before declaring it removed.

Export bilingual subtitles without losing the layout

Decide whether the design or the timed text matters more:

  • Burned-in video preserves the two-language look because the captions become pixels in the exported file.
  • A separate SRT carries timed text for another player or platform, but not CapCut fonts, animation, colour or screen position.

Basic SRT styling is limited; YouTube’s supported subtitle-file documentation says SRT style markup is not recognized. Do not promise a client that two beautifully styled CapCut rows will survive as the same designed layout in an SRT.

Current CapCut caption-export support also does not guarantee that every translated track can be downloaded as its own subtitle file. Keep the project, inspect the live Caption Export dialog and verify each file before handoff.
