SRT ↔ WebVTT · local conversion

Convert an existing subtitle file in either direction: SRT to VTT, or VTT to SRT. Paste the text or choose a UTF-8 file, review the converted cues, then download. This converter does not upload your subtitle text or create captions from a video.

Or paste below. Existing file content stays unchanged. Save older text encodings as UTF-8 first.

Plain caption text only. Styling, cue identifiers, positioning, comments, regions and word-level timing are not carried over. A warning identifies removed features. Invalid cues stop conversion.

What changes between SRT and VTT?

SRT uses sequence numbers and comma-separated milliseconds. WebVTT starts with WEBVTT and uses a period in its timestamps. The converter changes those structural parts while retaining caption punctuation, Unicode characters and text line breaks. It writes a new UTF-8 file.

WebVTT can also carry cue settings, styling and additional markup, as documented in MDN’s WebVTT format guide. A plain SRT caption cannot represent all of those features. This tool removes supported formatting with an explicit warning; it rejects unknown markup rather than guessing at its meaning.

The Library of Congress description of SubRip notes that SRT formatting support depends on the player and that character encoding is not standardized. Here, UTF-8 input avoids guessing which legacy encoding your file uses.

Review the result before importing

  • Check a cue with punctuation, an accented name and more than one line.
  • Confirm the first and last timestamps. Conversion preserves time; it does not synchronize a mistimed transcript.
  • Review any overlap or formatting warning. The destination may display overlapping cues differently.
  • Keep the original file if you need WebVTT placement, voice labels or styling later.

For a CapCut workflow, first export an available SRT caption file or follow the subtitle import guide for the supported platform route. If the words appear at the wrong moment, use the caption timing guide; changing the extension will not repair an offset.

Does conversion send my file to a server?

The converter reads the chosen file in this page, produces text in browser memory and downloads a local file. Its conversion code makes no network request and uses no browser storage for your captions. The website itself can still load its normal theme, analytics and other services.

Why was my file rejected?

Check for a missing blank line between cues, an invalid timestamp, an end time before the start, or a file saved in a legacy text encoding. SRT input needs numbered cues. A transcript without timestamps needs caption creation first.
